Letter: No more high-capacity wells

Letters to the editor

EDITOR: Water is the one essential that life cannot survive without. All people have a right to adequate water, not just for-profit businesses. Since Stevens Point drilled its latest high capacity well, families have been forced to use their own money to re-drill their wells. No one reimbursed them for their cost, while other nonresidents of Hull profited from their loss. One of the great advantages of living in the town of Hull is not being held captive to cities’ water and sewer costs and demands. We chose to live here to be less dependent on bureaucracy. Now, other individuals and groups seek to levy potential new costs on us to meet their own personal agendas.

It is no secret that our aquifer is slowly depleting. It has been a source of good, pure water for all. The sandy soil around Stevens Point already requires substantial water by the farmers; people water lawns whether they need it or not and at times when evaporation is greatest; fountains utilize thousands of gallons of water for aesthetic reasons only.

Stop these excessive uses of our most precious resource for the good of a few and the detriment of many. Town of Hull supervisors and residents, let your voices send a cry of no to further high capacity wells!

David Smeltzer,
