Poky Pedaling 2016 season kicks off May 21

For USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin

STEVENS POINT - Poky Pedaling Stevens Point has created a new charity-themed event, Shop & Donate by Bike, that will kick of its 2016 Bike Fun Calendar.

During the event, which will kick off at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 21 at Bukolt Park near the skate park, participants will take a 10-mile loop bicycle ride and visit three shops via calm streets and non-motorized paths. Shopping teams formed at the start will be given lists of items to purchase at each shop, and the accumulated purchases will be carried using flatbed bicycle trailer to CAP Services Family Crisis Center where everything will be donated.

CAP Services is a private, nonprofit community action agency that has been helping low-income people attain economic and emotional self-sufficiency since 1966. Their Family Crisis Center provides a safe place to stay and legal advocacy and support services to domestic abuse survivors and their children, as well as short-term housing and intervention services to runaway youth.

As with all Poky Pedaling events, participants in Shop & Donate by Bike will slowly ride together in one contiguous group. The ride should reach CAP Services Family Crisis Center at around 3:30  p.m., and should return to Bukolt Park around 4 p.m.

Each participant is asked to spend $5 on donation items at each shop, totaling $15 over the course of the ride. Those choosing not to donate, such as children or others simply tagging along, are also welcome. Aside from any amount spent on donation items, Shop & Donate by Bike is free of charge. As a participation incentive, PPSP will make an additional $1 cash donation for each donating participant to CAP Services Family Crisis Center up to $100.

The 2016 Bike Fun Calendar has a total of seven events this year, and can be viewed at PokyPedalingStevensPoint.org.

Poky Pedaling Stevens Point has been creating Bike Fun via themed community building events involving urban transportation bicycling since 2012. Themes showcase the historical, scenic, cultural and whimsical aspects of our urban landscape. The events are always free of charge, and all are welcome to participate.
