Lydia Tillman, 6, of Plover looks at the ice cream case at King Cone on Friday after the Plover location opened for the season. Lydia chose a scoop each of bubble gum and cupcake king ice cream.

— King Cone opened for the season on Friday, ready to give residents a first taste this year of the shop's homemade ice cream.

Around 30 people were lined up outside the business, at 2534 Post Road, which is entering its fifth year in Plover. Despite a temperature of 9 degrees, making it one of the colder openings for King Cone, a steady crowd continued throughout the first half hour after the noon opening, and store manager Ben Klosinski said the crowd was about what he expected to see.

Dave and Judy Gervais along with Dorothy Knights, all of Plover, showed up about an hour before Friday's opening. The Gervaises each ordered a cup of coconut cabana, while Knights got a cup of butter pecan kruncher. The group each also received a complimentary pint of zanzee chocolate bar, given to the first 100 customers through the door on Friday.

"We come every year on the first day, and it's worth it," Knights said. "It's very good ice cream."
